What is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is a scientifically validated approach to understanding and changing behavior. It is regarded as the highest standard of care for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) endorsed by medical professionals and recognized by organizations like the American Medical Association and the Centers for Disease Control. ABA therapy systematically applies techniques and positive reinforcement to improve socially significant behaviors while reducing maladaptive behaviors specific to the individual's needs. This occurs through continuous implementation, observation, measurement, and analysis of therapy goals.

Skills areas that ABA addresses include but are not limited to the following:

·        Foundational Learning Skills

·        Language and Communication Skills

·        Social Awareness & Relationship Skills

·        Adaptive Living and Self-Care Skills

·        Coping and Emotional Regulation Skills

·        Play and Leisure Skills

·        Reduction of Behaviors that Interfere with Daily Functioning and Learning

The comprehensive nature of ABA therapy necessitates a significant time commitment to ensure repeated practice for skill acquisition. Research consistently highlights the positive correlation between the intensity of ABA therapy and outcomes, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing these sessions, especially at an early age. ABA therapy is provided with frequent daily or weekly sessions in one of the following two ways:

  • Focused ABA Treatment: Appropriate for individuals who require treatment in a few skill areas and/or low behavioral interference. A focused schedule typically consists of 10-25 therapy hours per week and could range from requiring 6 months to two years of treatment.
  • Comprehensive ABA Treatment: Appropriate for individuals requiring treatment in many skill areas and/or moderate to high behavioral interference. A comprehensive schedule typically consists of 30-40 therapy hours per week and could require two or more years of treatment.
